For developers who rely on vcpkg, a major update has just been announced that will revolutionize their workflow: package versioning in vcpkg! This feature allows you to install specific versions of dependencies and control installed versions over time, making it easier than ever to manage your project's dependencies.

To enable versioning, you need to turn on the 'versions' feature flag. Once enabled, you'll have access to a range of benefits, including reproducible builds independent from the current state of the vcpkg ports registry, convenient upgrading of all declared dependencies at once via baselines, and the ability to freeze dependencies at specific versions.

One of the most significant advantages of package versioning is its ability to declare minimum version constraints on dependencies. This means you can ensure that your project only uses compatible versions of dependencies, reducing the risk of conflicts or errors.

But what does this mean in practical terms? For example, let's say you're working on a project that requires a specific version of a library. With package versioning, you can specify exactly which version of that library you want to use, rather than relying on vcpkg to pick the most appropriate compatible version. This level of control is especially important for projects with complex dependencies or strict requirements.

It's worth noting that this feature is still experimental and not currently available for libraries installed via the command line. To use package versioning, a vcpkg.json manifest file must be present in your repo to declare dependencies.

For now, we're considering this feature completely optional – you can choose not to specify library versions, and vcpkg will pick the most appropriate set of compatible versions for your dependencies from its baseline catalog.
